Crafting Mead, Caring for the Earth
At Saxnot Meadery, our approach to sustainability is shaped by the old traveller’s saying“take only memories, leave only footprints".
Inspired by our journeys across the globe as young Saxons - travelling through places where resources are scarce and learning from the landscapes, people, and traditions we encountered - we’ve brought home a deep respect for using only what we need and making thoughtful choices wherever we can.
Every choice we make, from ingredients to packaging, is a careful balance between doing right by the planet and staying true to the scale of our small, independent craft.
We’re not perfect, and we don’t claim to be. Sustainability is a continual journey - one that evolves, one that requires compromise, and one that we are committed to walking step by step.
This page shares the choices we've made so far and the improvements we’ll keep pursuing as we grow.
Our journey so far...
-
Our honey is 100% pure honey. We work with both small local and larger national producers who share our commitment to authenticity.
-
Our glass bottles are fully recyclable - and if you are local, we will always take them back!
-
Our bottle bags are made from 100% recycled paper and can be recycled once their rope handles are removed.
-
Our bottle labels are 100% recyclable, vegan‑friendly, and even the glue is recyclable.
-
Our 500ml bottle caps are plastic, and whilst most plastics are now recyclable, we are actively researching greener alternatives. Natural cork, for example, is recyclable, but still needs an additional tamper‑evident seal - and wrapping cork in plastic isn’t a solution we’re satisfied with.
-
We support the UK economy by purchasing from UK‑registered businesses.
-
We have undertaken a review of our current practices with our local council and can use the Green Business logo. This recognises that our business has made a start on it's green transition and demonstrates our commitment to people and planet.
